What is WordPress, and why you should use it

by | Nov 8, 2018 | blog

You have probably heard the the phrase thrown about or people talking about their “wordpress website” and chances are, you have never been into web design or development and why should you know what it is? Until you realise that to keep your small business thriving you need to be online and catch customers in the world wide web. And then you began doing some research on how to go about your new website, and all you ever hear about is… WordPress.

So what is WordPress?

WordPress is an open-source software that makes designing and maintaining a website a breeze. Open source means that anyone can contribute to wordpress and add their own snippets of code that will improve the software. WordPress is used by more than 60 million websites, including 30.6% of the top 10 million websites as of April 2018. WordPress is a free software that you download to your website domain after you have bought the domain* and it allows you to work behind the scenes designing and adding content to your website through its own interface.

WordPress was originally created for bloggers as an easy way to maintain their blog, allow comments from readers and provide an aesthetically pleasing interface without the need to understand the coding behind it. But the platform was so successful that WordPress pretty quickly became a software for building all types of websites including online shopping and businesses.

Why should you use WordPress to build your Website?

Here I’ll go through some of the amazing things about WordPress and why that means WordPress is the way to go.

1. WordPress is easy to use.

WordPress was designed for non-designers. That doesn’t mean you should go it alone, but it does mean that you won’t have to rely on your web designer to change one picture or correct a spelling mistake. After launching a website, Most Web Designers offer a free live video tutorial with each client that they work with, teaching them the basics of maintaining their website alone. This makes you self sufficient and not have to rely on your designer for the rest of your life. Of course you may want your designer to continue updating your site after it is launched, and maintenance packages available for this.

2. Loads of Themes and plugins available.

Themes act as a template for your website. There are thousands of WordPress themes available to suit every budget so you can be sure your website will be as unique as your business. The popularity of WordPress is so great that there is almost every feature imaginable for a website available to use on your website. These extra features are called plugins (I guess because you plug them into your website and they start working). Some are free and others are premium, and because WordPress is open source, anyone can make a plugin and add it to the wordpress.org database. This means that there are an abundance of features available for you to use with your website.

3. Affordable – The WordPress software is 100% free.

That leaves you to spend your money on the things that are important to you. (Like a good designer for example :)) If a certain premium plugin is very important to you, you can choose to spend the money on it. If it is not so important to you, many plugins offer a lite version that is free. But the point is that a Wordpress website can fit all budgets.

4. WordPress is regularly updated and features are added very often.

There are many talented people behind it making sure that it is safe against cyber hackers and other security concerns. You are never 100% guaranteed security, but you can be sure WordPress does its best to keep your website safe. Web designers need to take the necessary precautions to keep your site safe from cyber threats, and advise you on these issues.
